A talk by Professors Anu Mohammad and Rakhshanda Saleem
Saturday 2pm - Oct 6th 2012
MIT, Room 4-237, 77 Mass Ave, Cambridge
The fire that claimed the lives of 300 garment workers in Karachi , Pakistan this September is not an anomaly but the inevitable consequence faced by workers with near non-existent negotiation powers in Bangladesh and Pakistan . Professors Muhammad and Saleem will discuss the corruption in the nexus of state and global capital - from garments industry to open-pit coal mining and offshore oil exploration.
Professor Anu Muhammad is a professor of economics in Dhaka , Bangladesh and is one of the leading activists to expose and organize against the machinations of predatory capitalism in Bangladesh , including against open pit coal mining on rich agricultural land. Professor Rakhshanda Saleem, a neuro-psychologist and professor at Lesley University has been a long standing member of The Alliance for a Secular and Democratic South Asia in Cambridge , MA .
