For decades, the few hundred residents of Las Pavas, a sustainable farming
community in southern Bolivar, a department (province) in northern
Colombia, have been forced to leave their land periodically to escape
paramilitary violence. But the community members have always returned. ****

** **

In 2006, as the community was organizing to claim its right to the land
under Colombian law, Daabon Group, a large producer of palm oil for the
international organic market, bought the community’s land from the absentee
owner who had lost his claim to the land. In July 2009, the Colombian riot
police forcefully removed the community of Las Pavas from the land. Nearly
two years later, the community returned to their homes and their struggle
to gain control over their land continues. ****

While a particular tragedy, the story of Las Pavas is emblematic of the
perpetual struggle in Colombia over control of the land and its
productivity. ****

** **

In this Speaking Tour, Etny Torres, a leader in the struggle against
expropriation of subsistence farmers’ land by government-backed
agrobusiness, and Jorge Eliécer Reales Maza, a human rights attorney
representing displaced campesinos, will place the story of Las Pavas in the
larger contexts of multinational corporate land grabs, international trade,
human rights and national sovereignty. ****
