Richard Levins is an ex-tropical farmer, ecologist, labor organizer,
mathematical biologist, activist, and philosopher of science. He
investigated birth defects caused by defoliants in Vietnam, pioneered in
ecology movement in Puerto Rico, organized Science for Vietnam, started the
Working Group on New and Resurgent Disease at HSPH, was active in
ecological agriculture in Cuba, is a member of the Cuban Academy of
Science. Authored Evolution in Changing Environments and with RC Lewontin,
The Dialectical Biologist and Biology Under the Influence. He currently
leads the unofficial ecology program at the HSPH. He has received awards
for teaching and mentoring at HSPH. He teaches Human Ecology (GHP 253) in
Fall 2 and the Ecology of Health in Development (GHP 520) in Spring 2.
