The use of women as props to incite the country to war is a common refrain in the United States, among government officials, journalists, and even some human rights activists. In 2010, TIME Magazine featured a picture of a mutilated Afghan girl on its cover, asking “What happens if we leave Afghanistan?” Last year, an Amnesty International ad campaign encouraged NATO to “Keep the progress going”, a headline imposed on a picture of Afghan women in burqas. In the current political context, with the US military and the CIA waging wars in several Muslim-majority countries, what is the role of the anti-war movement in the United States? How do we reconcile our opposition to the violence directed at men and women, families and communities, by the United States and by militant groups?

Join Saadia Toor, Associate Professor of Sociology, Anthropology, and Social Work at College of Staten Island, CUNY will speak at Lesley University. Toor’s research is on issues of culture, nationalism, gender/sexuality, state formation, and international political economy. Her recently published book, The State of Islam tells the story of the Pakistani nation-state through the lens of the Cold War, and more recently the War on Terror, in order to shed light on the domestic and international processes behind the rise of militant Islam across the world. Toor uses the tools of cultural studies and postcolonial theory to understand what is at stake in discourses of Islam, socialism, and the nation in Pakistan
