Why are we trying to be the Grand Marshal at Boston Pride?
When people talk about the history of Pride festivals there is often a
brief recognition that these days stem from the events that took place at
the Stonewall Inn and on Christopher street in 1969. Unfortunately most of
this recognition assumes that the criminalization of LGBTQ people has ended
in some way. Unfortunately the stories of Stonewall are so often told by
those who have taken privileges and benefits at the expense of those more
marginalized within our communities. Our intent to head up the largest
festival in all of New England is to remind the million attendees that we
must not only tip our hats to criminalized queers, but we must prioritize
the voices of LGBTQ people in prison, who have experienced policing, who
have gone through the violence of the court systems, and who are silenced
over and over again. We want to lead Pride with fists up, with a call to
abolish police and prisons, with a power that reminds us that the police
riot at Stonewall is far from over and that we will fight until all people
are free!

Lets send a message to Pride that we will not be silenced, we will not be
forgotten, we will not accept a moment of silence. We are here to organize
and build the strength of our movement!

Thank you for all your love!

Black & Pink is an open family of LGBTQ prisoners and “free world” allies
who support each other. Our work toward the abolition of the prison
industrial complex is rooted in the experience of currently and formerly
incarcerated people. We are outraged by the specific violence of the prison
industrial complex against LGBTQ people, and respond through advocacy,
education, direct service, and organizing.
