======== SKILLS FOR THE PEACE ACTIVIST: HANDS-ON, HOW-TO WORKSHOPS AT THE
DIGITAL MEDIA CONFERENCE THIS WEEKEND ===============================
Join fellow peace activists, social justice organizers this weekend to
develop your skills and increase our movement's effectiveness. The
*Digital Media Conference* has introductory workshops on using Twitter,
making videos, using radio, and working with free software -- all aimed at
beginners but taught by some of the most skilled activists and artists
produced by the #Occupy Movement and the peace movement. See the conference
workshop list
here: http://digitalmediaconference.org/2013/workshops-overview [1] At
the same time, the conference also speaks to the big issues of war and peace
in a Digital Age while also connecting Mass Surveillance, Mass Incarceration,
and Mass Deportations. Social justice and social change agendas come together
at the conference: see the conference plenary sessions
here: http://digitalmediaconference.org/2013/conferencewide [2] This
conference is organized by Mass. Global Action/encuentro5, Open Media Boston,
and TecsChange. It is co-sponsored by Lesley University, the American Friends
Service Committee, Mass. Peace Action, Metrowest Peace Action, Dorchester
People for Peace, and United for Justice with Peace. It is open to the

away for lack of funds. Join us starting on Friday, October 25 at 6pm
through Sunday, October 27, 2013 at 1pm. All conference details online

*Freedom and Unfreedom in the Digital Age: 3rd Digital Media Conference to
Address NSA Scandal, Civil Liberties, and Mass Incarceration *
On October 25-27, 2013, the 3rd Digital Media Conference will take place at
Lesley University's Doble Campus (http://goo.gl/maps/pqDQr [4]) on Mellen St.
in Cambridge.
The conference's theme is Freedom and Unfreedom in the Digital Age. Plenaries
and workshops will address the grave threat posed to American democracy by
the ongoing NSA scandal, and relate it to threats and opportunities posed to
civil liberties by the swift growth of digital media and technology in the
service of the national security state.
Additional connections will be made between the struggle to expand civil
liberties nationwide and the campaigns by communities of color and immigrants
to resist constant surveillance and mass incarceration by increasingly
militarized police, ICE, the DEA, state and federal prison systems, and the
private prison and security industries. There will also be basic workshops on
social media, digital storytelling and privacy software.
Confirmed speakers include: Ibrahim Abdul-Matin, author and media personality
(NYC), Kade Crockford of ACLU Massachusetts, Gregg Housh of Anonymous, Betty
Yu of the Center for Media Justice (NYC), Rajesh Kasturirangan of MIT,
Subrata Ghoshroy of MIT, Libby Reinish of the Free Software Foundation, Robin
Jacks of Occupy Boston, Alfredo Lopez of May First/People Link (NYC), Chris
Faraone of the Weekly Dig, and Deb Nicholson of MediaGoblin.
Tickets are $35 ($10 students and low-income).
