On April 28, protests erupted in Bogota, Medellin, Cali and other cities
throughout Colombia to oppose planned tax hikes, corruption, police
violence, and economic devastation for the working masses. These are
some of the largest protests seen in decades. Discontent has been
simmering in Colombia for months amid rumors of more austerity and
pension cuts. Students have been protesting corruption and cuts in
public education. There has been an uptick in violence and
assassinations against indigenous and social leaders even after the 2016
peace deal ending the Colombian civil war. The right-wing paramilitary
murders continue today, years after the war ended! Dozens of protesters
have been killed by police but the mobilizations continue and now
include Colombians of all stripes.
Please join with the Boston May Day Coalition in welcoming Antuan Castro
del Rio who will describe the unfolding uprising and prospects for a
better future for the workers and campasinos of Colombia. Antuan has
participated in the protests and will present a revolutionary
perspective on events in Colombia today. Hasta la victoria siempre!
