Glen Ford And The Black Radical Critical Tradition

*By Ajamu Baraka, Black Agenda Report*. It's easy to run with the herd,
especially when it can bring possible career advancements and even
significant monetary gain. That is why, for so many, making decisions to
find a way into the mix, to play the game in order to advance one’s
individual objectives, does not present any internal moral debate. It is
just common sense. But for the oppressed and their radical intellectuals
and activists, accommodationism is not an option without surrendering
one’s soul. Glen Ford and many of our generation refused to do that.
Glen made the decision to devote himself to being a truth teller on the
side of the people... -more-

The Obsessive Pursuit Of Assange As UK Prepares Its Own Espionage

*By Alexander Mercouris, Consortium News*.The single-minded U.S. pursuit
of Julian Assange as Britain proposes changes to its official secrets
law shows the fierce determination of both governments to conceal their
secrets, writes Alexander Mercouris. Recent developments in London point
to a fresh attack on whistleblowing and media freedoms in the midst of
strange and disturbing developments in the Julian Assange case. District
Judge Vanessa Baraitser of the Westminster Magistrates’ Court on Jan. 4
refused the U.S. government’s request for Assange’s extradition to the
United States, where he faces charges under the... -more-

Preliminary Assange Appeal Hearing Scheduled For August 11

*By Defend Wikileaks*. The United States government has been given
limited permission to appeal the District Court’s decision to block the
extradition of Julian Assange from the UK to the U.S. Britain’s High
Court ruled that the U.S. government could appeal on some but not all of
their requested points. Now a preliminary hearing has been scheduled for
August 11th, at the Royal Courts of Justice in London, to argue the
scope of that appeal, and whether the U.S. government will be allowed to
appeal on its other two proposed lines of argument. Assange is expected
to attend in person. -more-

Stories Of Resistance From El Maizal Commune

*By Cira Pascual Marquina and Chris Gilbert, Venezuelanalysis*. El
Maizal Commune lies in the fertile lands between the Lara and Portuguesa
states in western Venezuela. Founded in 2009, this rural commune has
since become an important political and economic force in both the
region and the country. It not only produces huge amounts of corn every
year, but also raises cattle and pigs, along with a growing number of
additional side enterprises. Most importantly, El Maizal Commune forges
new social relations and new human beings: people committed to the
socialist project that Chávez promoted during his lifetime. -more-

Reverend William Barber Leads Moral Monday March For Voting Rights

*By John Zangas, DC Media Group*. On Monday August 2, 2021, Reverend
William Barber II walked alongside Jesse Jackson leading several
thousand on a revival of that same moral imperative. Their Moral Monday
March was to demand that Congress restore the Voting Rights Act, signed
by President Johnson on August 8, 1965, by passing the For The People
Act, legislation which will strike down at the Federal level, all new
voting restrictions passed in States like Georgia, Pennsylvania,
Louisiana, and Arizona. Reverend Barber joined clergy from around the
country and working people in calling for a federal minimum wage of...

Media Paints Israel As 'Victim' As Hezbollah Responds To Airstrikes

*By Robert Inkalesh, Mintpress News*. Lebanese Hezbollah has claimed
responsibility for the firing of the 19 rockets into northern Israel in
response to a series of Israeli air and artillery strikes carried out
earlier this week on southern Lebanon. The rocket fire reportedly
shocked the Israeli military establishment and sparked further
aggression against targets in Lebanon’s south; and, in defiance of all
evidence, Western mainstream media quickly took to painting Israel as
the victim. This morning’s rocket fire, specifically targeting open
areas, was the first of its kind conducted by Hezbollah since the
conclusion of the 2006... -more-

Rather Than Pay Fairer Wages, Businesses Look To Prisons

*By Eddie Conway, The Real News Network*. For months, business owners
and corporate media pundits in the US have complained about a “labor
shortage,” claiming that businesses are struggling to find new employees
because “no one wants to work.” Rather than enticing applicants with
more competitive wages and stronger benefits and protections, though,
many businesses are opting to exploit prison slave labor. In this
episode of Rattling the Bars, TRNN Executive Producer Eddie Conway
speaks with Michael Sainato about his recent report for /The Guardian/,
which details how bosses in the US are exploiting prison labor... -more-

Advocates Urge NYC To Be Nuclear Weapons Free

*By Erik McGregor*. In commemoration of the August 6 and August 9, 1945
bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, New York City-based nuclear
disarmament advocates assembled outside the Municipal Building on August
6, 2021 to deliver a letter to Council Speaker Corey Johnson urging him
to bring NYC nuclear disarmament legislation, Resolution 976 &
Introduction 1621, to the floor for a vote. The site of the gathering is
rich with history, because the development of the atomic bombs began
across the street from City Hall at the Manhattan Project headquarters,
at 270 Broadway. -more-

2021 Is The Year Of Catastrophic Climate Change, But Capitalism
    Doesn’t Care

*By Andy Worthington*. "The notion of the supremacy of
self-gratification has been so powerfully engrained in us, the
economically fortunate ones — particularly over the last 40 years or so
— that our fellow citizens, in significant numbers, soon forgot the
beauty of the clean air, the silence and the return of birdsong to our
city centres in the first Covid lockdown, and felt stifled, longing to
return to whatever their previous obsessions had been — tourism,
spectacle, over-consumption." As cars returned to London’s streets in
significant numbers, and construction lorries once more began
transporting their deadly cargoes, and as the air once more... -more-

Juan Guaidó Paid UK Legal Fees With Looted Venezuelan Money

*By John McEvoy, The Canary*. Court documents show that Venezuelan
opposition figure Juan Guaidó‘s UK legal costs were paid with money
appropriated from the Central Bank of Venezuela. As part of a legal
effort to access roughly US$2bn of Venezuelan gold held in the Bank of
England, Guaidó’s legal team drew on hundreds of thousands of dollars –
if not millions – originally seized from the Central Bank of Venezuela
in the US. Guaidó’s attempt to seize Central Bank of Venezuela assets in
the UK, in other words, has been financed by money previously seized
from the Central Bank of Venezuela. -more-

Scientific Crusader Showed That No Biological Basis For Race Exists

*By Prabir Purkayastha, Struggle La Lucha*. On July 4, Richard Lewontin,
the dialectical biologist, Marxist and activist, died at the age of 92,
just three days after the death of his wife of more than 70 years, Mary
Jane. He was one of the founders of modern biology who brought together
three different disciplines—statistics, molecular biology and
evolutionary biology—that mark the discipline today. In doing so, he not
only battled crude racism masquerading as science, but also helped shed
light on what science really is. In this sense, he belongs to the rare
group of scientists who are equally at home in the laboratory and while
talking about... -more-
