Dr. Eyad el Sarraj (1943-2013) was the first psychiatrist in the Gaza
Strip and a renowned campaigner for peace with justice who recognized the
vital connection between mental health and human rights. The founder in 1990
of the Gaza Community Mental Health Programme (GCMHP), he received the
first human rights award given by the US Physicians for Human Rights, among
many other international honors. His courage, decency, independence of mind,
and vision of a better world made him a beacon of moral conscience and hope
for those Israelis seeking peace with Palestinians and Palestinians
struggling with both the occupation and their own ruinous political
divisions. Nearly a year after his death on December 17, 2013,
“Instilling Hope in Gaza” will examine the conditions in the Gaza Strip
that shaped his life and work, how the Gaza Community Mental Health
Programme is today forging ahead with his work, and what more can be done to
build on his legacy in the years ahead. Suggested donation at the door:
$10 - or more! Funds will support the work of the Gaza Community Mental
Health Programme. *Host*: The Middle East Education Group at First Parish
Cambridge. *Co-sponsors:* American Friends Service Committee - New England
Region, Boston Coalition for Palestinian Rights, Grassroots International,
Harvard School of Public Health, Jewish Voice for Peace - Boston, Physicians
for Human Rights, United for Justice with Peace.
