Greetings!
Autumnal Greetings to one and all!  We start our new season and simultaneously note
a memorable year to come. Our October events take place on the cusp of a presidential
election and also mark an early overture to our 50th anniversary. Let's all make
 this an exceptional year for Cambridge Forum with outstanding attendances and unprecedented
levels of public support for our mission.  We, for our part, will endeavor to provide
worthwhile programs for your enjoyment and edification.
As usual, I will be sending out printed newsletters shortly with our annual fundraising
envelopes.  If you prefer to donate via our Paypal account please indicate this

THE MANIFESTO AGAINST PARENTING
Please come to our first Cambridge Forum on October 12 at 7 PM for a spirited discussion
with Alison Gopnik, on why we need to debunk our flawed concept of "good parenting".
 Gopnik is author of "The Gardener and the Carpenter", the NY Times best seller,
 and a Professor of Psychology and Philosophy at the University of California, Berkeley.
This Cambridge Forum event will take place down the street at The Atrium, 50 Church
Street, on the 4th floor. A book signing will starts at 6 PM with refreshments, 
and the talk begins at 7 PM followed by question and answers.
Gopnik is an internationally-recognized leader in the study of children's learning
and development.

Race and Power in America
Join us on Monday October 17, at
7:00 pm at First Parish Meeting House, 1446 Massachusetts Ave, Cambridge for a timely
and provocative discussion with four distinguished Harvard professors.
Professor Danielle Allen from the Edmond J. Safra Center for Ethics will moderate
the discussion with Professors Tommie Shelby, Elizabeth Hinton and Kahlil Gibran
 Muhammad.  All four participants have recently authored books on aspects of race,
poverty, crime and incarceration.  Signed books will be available for purchase at
6:00 pm.
This event is a joint collaboration among CF and Edmond J. Safra Center for Ethics,
the Hutchins Center for African and African American Research, Harvard University
Press and Harvard Book Store.  This event is free and open to the public and we 
encourage all to participate in the open discussion which will follow the speakers'
presentations.

FOLK MUSIC AT FIFTY

To kick off early celebrations to mark Cambridge Forum's 50th anniversary, we are
hosting a lively evening of music and reminiscences of the Harvard Square folk scene
over the past half century.
To help jog our memories Betsy Siggins, raconteur extraordinaire will refresh our
knowledge of the wild days she spent in Cambridge with Joan Baez and Bob Dylan in
the 60's. Millie Rahn will moderate the discussion and there will be live music 
to intersperse the conversation. Stay tuned for details of the musicians but mark
your calendars, as this is an evening you won't want to miss!
