Is Trump Threatening War with Iran?

A Talk and Discussion with Gareth Porter
Wednesday, February 22, 7:00 pm
First Church in Cambridge, 11 Garden St

Gareth Porter is an independent investigative journalist and historian and the winner of the 2012 Gellhorn Prize for journalism, named after the highly respected 20th century American foreign correspondent Martha Gellhorn.  From 2004 until 2015, Porter covered U.S. military policy and intelligence operations in Iraq, Afghanistan, Iran and Syria as well as the drone wars in Pakistan and Yemen for Inter Press Service, Truthout, Consortium News, The Nation, Truthdig and Middle East Eye.  He has also been published in Foreign Policy, the National Interest and other journals and websites.  He has been interviewed frequently on al Jazeera English, RT, Democracy Now and the Real News Network.

Mr. Porter was Saigon bureau chief of Dispatch New Service International in 1971, and from 1974 through 1976, he was Co-Director of the Indochina Resource Center, an anti-war educational and lobbying organization in Washington, D.C.  He received his PhD in Southeast Asian studies and international politics from Cornell University and taught international studies at City College of New York and American University.

He is the author of two books that present a new understanding of major episodes in U.S. foreign and military policy. Perils of Dominance: Imbalance of Power and the Road to War in Vietnam, published in 2005, documents the fact that the top national security officials had pressured on Kennedy and Johnson to go to war in Vietnam.  Popular historian Andrew Bacevich called it "without a doubt, the most important contribution to the history of U.S. national security policy to appear in the past decade."

Manufactured Crisis: The Untold Story of the Iran Nuclear Scare, published in 2014, shows how the CIA and the Pentagon quickly focused on Iran as a threat to proliferate nuclear weapons beginning in 1991 immediately after the collapse of the Soviet Union in order to compensate for the loss of the Soviet threat and traces the history of official and media scaremongering about the Iranian nuclear program that followed for the next quarter century.

Mr. Porter is now working on a book on "The Permanent War State" that will present an entirely new understanding of how it has worked and how it has evolved into a public-private military-intelligence business complex.
