Since the election of Evo Morales to the presidency of Bolivia on October
20, Bolivia has experienced a period of escalating violence by the
right-wing opposition. After Evo Morales agreed to hold new elections, the
head of the Bolivian Army, Gen. Williams Kaliman, demanded his resignation.
Faced with the approaching seizure of power by the army, Evo Morales has
resigned. The rightist opposition clearly demonstrated that they have no
interest in democracy and will seize power by any means in order to suppress
the indigenous population and secure the rule of the wealthy elite as well
as render the nation subservient to international imperial interests. All
defenders of self-determination and who stand in solidarity with the people
of Bolivia must oppose the coup and make our voices heard.
