NEWS FLASH: BUSH VISIT TO NEWPORT CONFIRMED
We received confirmation from the Providence Journal
early this evening that President Bush will be
speaking at the Naval War College in Newport on
Thursday, June 28 at 11:00 AM. We are proceeding as
planned to hold a peace rally at 11:00 AM near the
rotary on Connell Highway at Route 138.
This location was chosen because we are not expecting
there will be public access to the naval base during
the President's visit, and the rotary area is close to
the main entrance to the base. Demonstrators will be
gathering near the Walmart at 11:00 AM and proceeding
to the rally site.
This is planned to be a peaceful and nonviolent
protest. Rally monitors will be on site to maintain
order and handle any communication with the
authorities. There are no plans for civil
disobedience at this rally.
If access to the Walmart/rotary area is blocked by the
authorities, we will gather at the Gateway Visitors
Center in downtown Newport and select another rally
location.
The Providence Phoenix, Providence Journal, Newport
Daily News and the Associated Press have all contacted
us about our plans and we expect there to be a lot of
national and local media at the event.
The rally has been endorsed by the RI Community
Coalition for Peace, the International Socialist
Organization, the Workers International League, the RI
Unitarian Universalists for Social Justice, South
Kingstown Justice and Peace Action Group, National
Civil Rights Coalition, MoveOn/East Bay, RI
Progressive Democrats of America, and the RI
Progressive League.
This is the President's first and possibly last visit
to Rhode Island, and it is important for as many
people as possible to demonstrate their opposition to
the President and to his disastrous course of action
in Iraq. Stand up for democracy and let your voice be
heard! Join us in Newport on June 28!
