THE COMMUNITY CHURCH OF BOSTON
SUNDAY SPEAKERS FORUM presents...
Sunday, April 3rd, 2011
11:00am
JAWAD HUSEIN
"Shaking off Colonialism & Tyranny: The Dawn of a Revolution for Dignity and
Unity in the Arab World"
On December 17, 2010, Mohamed Bouazizi, a produce seller, set himself on
fire in protest of the confiscation of his cart wheel and the harassment and
humiliation that was inflicted on him by a municipal official and her aides.
His act of defiance set the stage for massive street protests in Tunisia
that led to the fall of the French-backed regime of Bin Ali. Street protests
would soon spread to towns and villages across the Arab world, declaring
unity, transcending artificial borders, ousting petty tyrants and
challenging their masters. We will explore the underlying causes for the
revolt, celebrate the spirit of its masses and discuss the challenges its
facing at this early stage.
Jawad Husein is a pro-Palestine activist in the Boston area.
