UJP Activist: Call to Action: Retire NATO, Create Jobs & Fund Peace
CALL TO ACTION: RETIRE NATO, CREATE JOBS & FUND PEACE
============================================================
Beginning this past winter, I have been working with a number of US peace
organizations which have formed a network* in collaboration with allies in
Europe who have been protesting NATO’s intrusive and anti-democratic presence
in their countries for years and more recently its wars from Afghanistan to
Libya.. Planning is underway for a counter summit and other activities in
Chicago when NATO and the G8 meet in May 2012.
Our goals for Chicago and in the months leading up to the Summit are to help
the wider U.S. peace movement to understand and to build opposition to NATO as
a nuclear alliance with global ambitions and strengthen grassroots organizing
capacity and political engagement to end the US/NATO wars, one which is also
sucking our tax dollars and resources that would be better used to create jobs
and meet real human needs here at home. We are also committed to bringing home
U.S. nuclear weapons and bases home. (A generation after the Cold War, the U.S.
maintains hundreds of military bases across NATO.).
A broad discussion on international collaboration for the 21st century and an
alternative vision for global security, peace and economic justice will be the
outcome of our organizing efforts.
Below is the call to action: "Retire NATO, Create Jobs & Fund Peace" Please
plan to join us in our conference in Chicago, and spread the word via elists
and social networking..
As rapid as the international and national developments are, much will go on
between now and May 2012. Please join the announcement elist
chicagomay2012 at googlegroups.com to stay up to date on the planning.
Please contact me about this exciting project at JGerson at afsc.org.
If you are a member of an organization, we hope your group will endorse the
call, join the network and help plan the activities. For organizations: to sign
onto this call or join the network and for additional information contact:
Joseph Gerson (JGerson at afsc.org) or Judith Le Blanc (jleblanc at peace-action.org).
