Rosa Elena Bello is my friend and a colleague from San Juan del Sur, Nicaragua who has worked with the Newton-San Juan del Sur Sister City Project since the mid 1990s. In San Juan del Sur she runs the Free High School for Adults, the clinic (Community Medical Services), the battered women's shelter now housing abused girls (Solidarity House), the regional Cabinet of Citizen Power, a nutrition program for children under five, and many other services for the populace in the southwest corner of Nicaragua. We have worked together since the mid 1990s. This year she was chosen the fifth Distinguished Visiting Practitioner of the International Center of Ethics, Justic and Public Life at Brandeis. She has done more than anyone in that region of Nicaragua to improve the lives of women, children, and men, supporting improvements in the fields of education, health care, gender equality, and human rights. Her twenty years of work have had transformative effects on the well-being of the population in the region. The letter of invitation notes "you will be a poignant example of a professional committed to social change."
Dr. Bello is giving a keynote entitled Village by Village, Barrio por Barrio: Integrated Development in Nicaragua on Wednesday, September 21, at 5 PM in Rappaporte Treasure Hall in the Library at the top of the campus. You can get a parking sticker when you enter the campus as well as directions, which are simple. The lecture will be in Spanish; and translated into English. Spanish-speaking workers at Brandeis are invited to this and other of her events. For more information about Dr. Bello's other events that week, see the Website of the International  Center, http://www.brandeis.edu/ethics/events/Bello.html;
