Motherhood and Poverty in America
with U. Mass Boston Prof. Randy Albelda
Set your Internet Browser to OBR.FM.
In 1964, President Johnson declared a "War on Poverty". Thirty two years
later, President Clinton claimed to end "welfare as we know it," overseeing
a major overhaul of programs serving mostly poor single mothers. The
"Washington Consensus" holds that promoting employment is the ticket out of
poverty, and that 1990s-style welfare reform has been a success. But with
the number of people in poverty at historic highs, how successful has this
strategy really been?
Why is poverty so persistent in the U.S.? Why does poverty fall so
especially heavily on women, especially single mothers? Why don't our
"anti-poverty" programs seem to help? Most importantly, how can we do
better?
Professor Randy Albelda, feminist, activist, economist, co-author (with
Chris Tilly) of Glass Ceilings and Bottomless Pits: Women's Work, Women's
Poverty, and author of numerous articles on women and poverty in Dollars and
Sense magazine and elsewhere, will help us answer these and other important
questions.
