*Join us TOMORROW!
Join the campaign to fight World Cup displacement in Brazil*
Line Break Media, in collaboration with local and global partners, invites
you to an evening of film, discussion, and food TOMORROW (9/3) as we
premiere “Rooting for the Home Team.”
The short video sheds light on the strength and struggle of Trilha do
Senhor, one of 22 communities in Fortaleza, Brazil fighting to remain in
the homes they have occupied for generations.
The dire nature of the situation is made clear as this community faces
imminent destruction and displacement in preparation for the 2014 FIFA
World Cup.
The screenings, set to take place in Minneapolis, Worcester and Boston, are
happening in coordination with a global video launch, online action
campaign, and on-the-ground activities taking place in Brazil the following
day.
These communities have come together to form The Movement to Fight in
Defense of Housing (MLDM) and have made significant gains in pressuring the
government to change its course.
However, they have called on the international community to join their
struggle and ensure that the delayed displacement turns into a plan to
prevent it altogether:
* Attend a screening of and discussion about the video produced with the
train track community about the displacement they’re facing with a proposed
light rail project. Learn about the steps they’ve taken to make their
voices heard, and fight against the displacement that the government wanted
to happen so quietly.
* Help build a solidarity network outside of Brazil to further awareness
about and take action against the devastating effects of World Cup projects
happening in Fortaleza, and other Brazilian host cities (including an
online petition set to launch Sept. 4).
* Be part of a discussion about housing rights in our own communities, and
how we can better fight housing injustice and displacement here in the
United States.
