Temporary Services is Brett Bloom, Salem Collo-Julin and Marc Fischer. The 
members of Temporary Services are currently based in Chicago and Copenhagen. 
Temporary Services has existed, with several changes in membership and 
structure, since 1998. Temporary Services produces exhibitions, events, 
projects, and publications. 
The distinction between art practice and other creative human endeavors is 
irrelevant to the group. They invent infrastructure or borrow it when necessary. 
The group is self-representing and has never had a commercial gallery 
affiliation. In 2008, Temporary Services created Half Letter Press (a publishing 
imprint and online store) to better circulate their own published work and to 
highlight and distribute the work of their peers. Publications by the group 
include Prisoners' Inventions with Angelo (WhiteWalls, 2003), Group Work 
(Printed Matter, 2005), Public Phenomena (Half Letter Press, 2008) and the 
nationally distributed newspaper Art Work: A National Conversation About Art, 
Labor, and Economics (self-published with many contributors in 2009).
For this event, Salem Collo-Julin will give a presentation on the group's 
project Prisoners' Inventions, a collaboration with Angelo, a person who is 
currently incarcerated. Angelo wrote about and made illustrations of many 
incredible inventions made by prisoners to fill needs that the restrictive 
environment of prisons do not allow or actively suppress. The inventions include 
everything from condoms to salt and pepper shakers to chess sets. With Angelo's 
insight, words, and guidance, and the assistance of many friends and 
collaborators, Temporary Services co-created a book and a traveling exhibition 
that includes re-creations of many of the inventions and of Angelo's prison 
cell. Temporary Services and Angelo started working on Prisoners' Inventions in 
2001 and the project has been seen internationally, including at the 2007 Athens 
(Greece) Biennial, at MassMOCA, and at the Transmediale Festival in Berlin.
